Stopwatch game: stop it at exactly 10.00

Start the watch, feel the seconds go by and stop it on the target. In blind mode the digits vanish after 3 seconds, so you have only your internal clock to go on.

Why it's harder than it looks

With the display visible you are really playing a reaction game: you watch 9.8… 9.9… and press, so your score is mostly the ~0.2 s it takes your thumb to respond, which good players learn to anticipate. Blind mode tests something different, your sense of elapsed time, which tends to wander by several percent over ten seconds and more when you're excited or distracted.

Counting helps. “One-Mississippi” or “one-thousand” each take roughly a second to say at a steady pace. Try a few rounds counting and a few without, and compare your best list.

Ways to play

  • Party round: pass the phone around; closest to 10.00 wins, and anyone who hits exactly 10.00 buys the snacks.
  • Classroom: a quick demo of reaction time versus time perception. Pair it with the reaction time test.
  • Long target: switch to 60 s blind and see how far your minute drifts.

Questions people ask

What is the 10 second stopwatch challenge?

Start a stopwatch and try to stop it at exactly 10.00 seconds. It is a test of timing and reaction; with the display hidden it becomes a test of your internal sense of time.

Is hitting exactly 10.00 possible?

Yes, but mostly by luck. The display resolves hundredths of a second, and even skilled players scatter by several hundredths from press to press.
